This is a very moving picture. A man studying by candle light, at the end of a table made of boards that are not flat, evenly spaced, or smooth. It paints a picture of a primitive life, of what life could have been like 200+ years ago in the U.S. The man shows wonderful concentration on his books!
One thing that gives away the age of the picture is that he is reading paperback books that lie flat.
Indeed a good picture. For sake of interest, my friend Alex Trecartin and I made the table.... We didn't have a planer, so your observation about the uneven or primitive nature of the table is quite correct!
